Houston coach Gary Kubiak was hospitalized following what doctor’s termed a “mini-stroke” as he jogged from the sidelines toward the locker room at halftime of the team’s 27-24 home loss to Indianapolis on Sunday night.
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been named interim coach in Kubiak’s absence, which is indefinite. Kubiak, a former NFL player, left the hospital Tuesday and anticipates a full recovery, but he’s not at all certain of a return anytime soon.
“I’ve been through an ordeal and my focus now is to get back to good health,” Kubiak said.
The loss to the Colts came after Houston had built a 21-3 lead and seemed poised to end a prolonged losing streak which instead has reached a franchise- record six games.
The team’s 2-0 start to the season – which included wins over San Diego and Tennessee – seems a century ago and the two-year stranglehold Houston has had on the AFC’s South Division appears all but complete as well.
“It’s been frustrating, especially after the past two seasons and the expectations,” receiver Andre Johnson said. “But if you don’t go out and play the way you’re supposed to play you’re not going to win. And we didn’t do that so that’s why we haven’t been winning. Somehow some way we’ve got to go out and fix the mistakes we’ve been making and try to win a game.”
Johnson failed to score in the team’s first seven games and exceeded 100 yards just twice before catching three TD passes from QB Case Keenum in the loss to the Colts and ending up with nine receptions for 229 yards.

HOUSTON — On Monday, a day after Richie Incognito was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the Dolphins, Texans defensive end Antonio Smith was asked if the allegations that Incognito bullied a teammate, threatened him and used a racial slur toward him surprised Smith.
“Definitely not,” Smith replied.
Smith
Incognito
Why?
“You are what you are.”
Smith and Incognito have a long history. It goes even further beyond the two games in which the two have sparred in the past two seasons. They both played in the Big 12 in college with Smith at Oklahoma State and Incognito at Nebraska. In the NFL, the players who were drafted one year apart wound up in the same division, facing each other twice a year.
Of course, Smith ripped off Incognito’s helmet this year during the Texans’ preseason game in Miami and the ensuing swing, which didn’t make any contact, led to a fine and suspension of two preseason games and one regular-season game for the defensive end. He didn’t say much about it, except to say that Incognito punched him in the face and grabbed his facemask before that. It’s the second time in two seasons the league has fined Smith for an incident involving Incognito.
Today Smith was asked again about Incognito, bullying and the racial nature of some of the allegations.
What was clear was that he doesn’t think what’s happening in Miami is a cultural problem with the NFL. He thinks hazing, when done with the right intentions, can be harmless. Rather, Smith thinks what’s happening in Miami is an Incognito problem.
And while the Dolphins locker room seems to be rejecting the notion that Incognito used racial slurs hatefully, it doesn’t sound like Smith buys that. Smith’s words:
“Hate is a big — especially in this day and age — it’s a big factor. If some of the allegations are true of things that he said or left voice messages. I don’t think that has any place anywhere. But other people believe differently.
“I don’t think in my opinion a grown man should get bullied. I think that if you realistically get bullied, there’s only one way my mom taught me and my dad taught me how to get rid of bullies as a child. I can’t say what to do in this day and age, but when I was a kid they always used to say, you hit a bully in the mouth, it’ll stop him from bullying. No matter what you hit him with.”
On hazing in general:
“I don’t know what’s the particulars on it. I know that a lot of it is just football players doing what football players do. The rest of the world don’t understand, they think it’s outrageous and different things like that. In every walk of life you have your rite of passage and your traditions that you do. These are the traditions that have been passed down throughout the NFL for a long time. I think a lot of the things that (happen are) no problem, it’s just in the hands of a person that you have in charge of doing it. Like having weapons or firearms. The person who’s in charge of (the weapon) is the one you should fear, not the firearm itself.
“If you’re hazing somebody and you’re hazing them out of pure hate instead of love, then I don’t think that has a place in (football). I’ve never been around it so I couldn’t even comment on it. When we have our fun, we laugh we joke with each other, you know it’s all in love. If (allegations about Incognito are) true from what I’m hearing, from what everybody’s saying, that’s not out of love. You’re just outright stalking somebody or threatening to beat their you know what and all of that, that’s totally different. That’s not what we as football players in the NFL do for hazing or right of passage, for rookies in that league.”
Does he feel vindicated?
“I don’t feel vindicated at all. That situation was what it was. I closed the chapter on that situation whether it was that situation or any other, you’re going to be the man that you are. He is the man that he is. That’s just the bottom line. It don’t reflect on me or anything, any of the situation.”
On Incognito’s use of a racial slur:
“When you’re generating that type of hate toward somebody, I don’t think that’s called for especially for somebody that’s supposed to be your teammate. You’re spending most of your time with these guys in the locker room, more time than you spend with your family. You grow to love a lot of your teammates as brothers as friends. Racial slurs, any kind of slurs or hate generating, I don’t think has any place in the locker room, a football locker room, a team, anywhere as a matter of fact. I don’t want to just bottle it into us. Make it all about football. It don’t have a place anywhere. But some people believe that way.”
Emotions will be at a peak for the Houston Texans when they make a midseason trip to the desert Sunday. They will be without head coach Gary Kubiak, who will be at home recovering from a mini-stroke, but Houston brings the league’s top-ranked defense to Arizona in hopes of ending a six-game losing streak.
Awaiting the Texans will be a team with confidence. The Cardinals come off the bye week healthy and rested, having played only one game in 24 days when kickoff arrives. That’ll either be a blessing or their demise, as the rust may have set in.
ESPN.com Cardinals reporter Josh Weinfuss and Texans reporter Tania Ganguli discuss Sunday’s matchup.
Weinfuss: What kind of impact will Kubiak’s health issue have on the Texans this week and on Sunday?

Can the Texans end their losing streak?
Ganguli: It was a chaotic, confusing and scary halftime for the Texans when Kubiak collapsed as he left the field Sunday. Kubiak is well liked by his coaches and players, so they’ll miss him, but knowing he will make a full recovery will help the team emotionally. On the football side, the biggest change will be on offense. He’s handing off offensive play-calling duties to coordinator Rick Dennison, who called the second half from the press box against the Colts. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips takes over as the overall decision-maker. They’ve tried to let their head coach rest, but they can’t keep him from thinking about the team. He calls to check in a fair amount.
Can you give me one player who has been a pleasant surprise and another who has been an unpleasant one for the Cardinals this year?
Weinfuss: It might seem obvious but Tyrann Mathieu has been a pleasant surprise to a lot of people. He not only has earned playing time by making game-changing plays, but he recently has become a starter. I think the Cardinals expected Mathieu to be good eventually, but the fact that he has come on so quickly has been a pleasant surprise for everyone. As for the flip side, tight end Rob Housler has been an unpleasant surprise. After finishing strong last season, Housler’s progress was hampered by a severely sprained ankle during training camp. It caused him to miss the first two weeks of the season and he hasn’t returned to last season’s form.
Does Case Keenum have what it takes to right the ship for the rest of the season?
Ganguli: Keenum is still learning a lot about being a quarterback. Phillips noted Wednesday that it’s important for the team to not try to do too much with a young quarterback. He’s learning how to read defenses and learning what chances to take and not take. I was always of the minority opinion that the quarterback situation was only part of the problem for the Texans rather than the whole problem. They’re still having issues on special teams and defense that they had with Schaub.
It has been a frustrating season for Andre Johnson but he has been part of a lot of bad teams and doesn’t complain. Larry Fitzgerald is another elite receiver who has seen some lean years, though he does have a Super Bowl berth while Johnson doesn’t. Has Fitzgerald ever shown frustration with his team’s situation, or is he also a guy who keeps that to himself?
Texans at Cardinals: Stat of the Week
7.74
Cards rookie Andre Ellington’s yards per carry, which leads NFL running backs with a a minimum of 25 carries.
Weinfuss: Larry Fitzgerald isn’t the type of person to air his dirty laundry no matter how bad it gets, such as last season when he caught passes from four quarterbacks. There’s no doubt he has been frustrated, especially during the past few seasons when his production has decreased. But Fitzgerald has kept his opinions to himself and I don’t see him venting in the locker room. Fitzgerald has been the prototypical team player. He doesn’t bash anyone and keeps talking about trying to improve and getting back to the playoffs, even making a run to the Super Bowl again.
Speaking of the playoffs, what do the Texans have to do during the final eight games to make a run to the postseason?
Ganguli: They have to be able to finish and put together a complete game. They’ve got to stop committing costly penalties. The most recent example was a hold on the return after the Colts’ final punt lost them critical yards on a drive that ended with a failed 55-yard field-goal attempt. And speaking of that, kicker Randy Bullock has to improve. Being 2-6 means the margin for error is tiny. The Texans have shown the ability to dominate good teams in spurts (they had double-digit leads over the Seahawks and the Colts and played the 9-0 Chiefs close). But spurts won’t get them there.
How do you explain the discrepancy between the Cardinals’ road and home records?
Weinfuss: Like a lot of teams, the Cardinals are simply more comfortable at home. Their routines are set, they know what’s coming, they know their surroundings. And University of Phoenix Stadium is also a tough place to play because of the noise levels, which the Cards have become accustomed to. Some might scoff at the notion of a true home-field advantage, but the Cardinals have one. As for why they can’t win on the road, if I had that answer, I’d be making a lot more money.
